What We Do

"The Florida House Institute is the premier showcase in our community for environmentally friendly living" —John Ryan, Sarasota County Stormwater Environmental Utility.

"I was driving by and just had to stop. I am studying Permaculture in Italy but only knew what I read in books. It was wonderful to see real Permaculture gardens at Florida House" —M.Fontazzo, Rome, Italy

The Florida House Institute’s "green" demonstration house and surrounding landscape integrates scientific principles and sustainable living practices as part of the foundation of our facility in Sarasota. Through our community partnerships, the Florida House demonstrates energy efficient technologies from high performance, heat transfer windows by PGT, all LED lighting, foam insulation and solar panels that power everything from the AC to the water heater.

Our facility also showcases landscape development focused on three areas: watershed balance, food supply and biodiversity. Storm water is retained on-site through a combination of bio-swales, pervious pavers and rain water cisterns. FHI also uses educational signage that describes for visitors the products and elements used throughout the facility. Our mission is to align land development and management with innovative sustainable design by demonstrating how valuable natural resources are conserved and quality of life improved.
